Strange happenings.

G'day folks!

Have any of you wise men ever spotted something like this before? This morning I opened up the oil cap on the crank case and I spotted this through the peep hole. Looks like hundreds of tiny little dinks around the clutch casing.
Anyone know what could have caused this? I only bought the bike recently so I'm unsure about when it might have happened. (See if I can get a photo to upload).20191029_114314.jpg

You need a starter chain tensioner as the stock one is failing. They were never any good to begin with.

Hardly buddy, this place is littered with threads on the subject.

Search "tensioner" to get an idea of the scale of the problem and the possible solutions.

Yeah mine started to look like that earlier this year so fitted one of those tensioners.

Pretty easy to fit and stops the possibility of a big failure.

Same problem on my ZZR1100.
Just replaced the tensioner in time!
Listen for a clattering noise as the starter turns.
Made worse if you pull the clutch in whilst starting.

Ouch! Looks nasty!
I've not noticed any funny sounds, plus mine doesn't require the clutch to start. Normally started in neutral on the side stand while I lock the gate and do up my lid, however the previous owner may not have been so kind

Glad I spotted it now rather than later after seeing your ZZR!

I always pull the clutch in to start any motorcycle on the button, even the Rex. I have not had any issues to date, I had none on my ZZR11 either and have covered many 000's of miles.

I'd hazard a guess that the clutch/starter chain issues are not really related, just an urban myth.
