    Excess coolant is pushed into the expansion tank but is sucked back in when the engine cools.

    Check the seals on the hoses to the expansion tank, as these won't stop the coolant being pushed in but may suck air instead of coolant when the engine cools.

    When my rad sprang a leak i had expansion tank full to mark, Rad half empty, figured she must have been sucking air in threw the leak, get that tank of boys and check the rad from time to time, this was a week before TT thank f%&^ i noticed the leak before leaving....................

    Any way of checking the valve in the rad cap or is it a case of spend some money, cheers for your advice

    You need cooling system tester with correct adapter and man behind it that known how to use it properly.
    Most shops have the tester, see if other Aussie can help.

    check the return pipe from the expansion is clear, mine was blocked when I got the bike, but beware if you use an air line to clear it as the bullet that came out after putting 120psi through it went round the garage at high speed

    I presume you are but always bleed the system cold from the water pump with the rad cap off.
    Also rotate the seal in the rad cap slightly so it's sealing in a different place.
