I used to change mine before any lay up. Then the engine isn't left festering in its own waste for months.

From what I understand Noggin is dead right.
Seldom do people get engines warm enough to get rid of condensation (which is worsened by the cooling cycle).
Also wear to an engine running but not under true load conditions is counter productive and promotes wear to engine components.

    Re: Oil argument

I did elude to the merits of either as oil does indeed become corrosive over time (which I'm guessing is due to what it absorbs/collects from the combustion process) but am not convinced leaving it in for 5 months affects the price of fish greatly

Think you will find the good book would suggest before and after but I would just park it up if its indoors (and if your fuel tap leaks and float valves pass you have saved yourself the price of oil and filter )

    Further to Noggin's comment.
Leave it till spring. Start it up every few weeks by all means but any condensation is going to end up in the oil unless you get it up to temp for a good while.
Good for the carburetors but not the oil or filter. Filters biggest enemy is water, they absorb it.

    Re: Oil argument

Well, it did say argument in the thread title so I just thought to chuck a bit of wood on the fire as it seemed a bit slow to get going
