you will be safe with 8x6 I expect although I always put the full size one on at MOT time.

I believe its no points but up to a grand fine should they wish it but I guess its all about why they are stopping you

We all used to ride with the single line arse rippingly small ones but I wouldn't now

    Re: Number Plate size

    For the Rex I ordered a plate, advertised as a being legal plate, with the dimensions 178mm x 127mm (7" x 5").

It was the perfect size for the shortened mudguard (but otherwise stock rear end), a mod the previous owner had carried out.

There is a smaller, still apparently legal, option of 152mm x 102mm (6" x 4") from the same company, but it wouldn't have been any advantage to go for that particular size, on my bike at least.

Bear in mind I'm in Ireland, but I doubt there'd be any difference in plate sizes across Europe.

On my SV I've a 230mm x 75mm (9" x 3") plate to compliment the tail tidy, It's diminutive, but still legal apparently.

Sorry I've pictures of neither. I'm a bad example of a forum user!

This is the company I used.

Not that you could use them yourself, but just to add some idea of their products and what might be possible in the UK too.

Here are the plate requirements for a UK motorcycle, taken from a link linked to that link in your post.

    • characters must be 64mm tall
    • characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be
    44mm wide
    • the character stroke (the thickness of the black print)
    must be 10mm
    • the space between characters must be 10mm
    • the space between the age identifier and the random
    letters must be 30mm
    • the margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate
    must be at least 11mm
    • vertical space between the age identifier and the
    random numbers must be 13mm.

    Re: Number Plate size

Thanks fellas for the Replies think I'm going to go for the 7x5 or 8x6 which I know is a little smaller than standard but hopefully not enough to piss plod off..I will be keeping the original for MOT time..I want to modify the rear mudguard/ fender is there a recommended product or is it a case of just getting the saw out thanks again

I have a 7 X 6 on the Rex, and had same on the MT10.

Doesn't attract Plod attention, even when I got stopped for speeding this year on the MT10, 3 of them didn't notice it

Standard ones go on for the MOTs, as they spot a smaller plate from a mile away.

Hired a Heritage Softail in Miami a few years back and the license plate was no larger than 5x3.. Does a sensible smaller plate really matter..

Some bike take humongous plattes better than another. Imagine this scooter with big plate
