Got to work and noticed my foot was a little slippy on the gear lever. Very slight 'fluid' from somewhere on my left boot - hoping it isn't fluid from the clutch, but couldn't find anything like coolant etc leaking.

No it's definitely not chain lube, too thin and slippy. Was my first thought (hope) but looks more like clutch fluid.

Hoping it's maybe something thrown up off the road, but I think that's wishful thinking, will take the cover off when I get home and have a shufty at it.

Helps with recognition to ad a dab of water and see how it is wetting surface with unknown oil smear plus smell is often telltale..

Tried this as it was absolutely solid and the head chewed. Even the ball bearing was rusty!
No way of getting the brass adj out, so drilled it out and went none returnable.

My gates are very narrow so Last night I had another go at taking the mirror extendas off, they where dry as a bone so was very careful.
a 21mm deep sockets your friend here, only use quality tools thereís a bit of a knack to it which I relearnt.
then I cleaned the threads up and used copaslip which Iíve had probably 30 odd years now.

We have a similar tin of anti-seize in the garage.

The ironic thing is that the lid has always been a complete pig to get off!
