Maybe the battery's on it's way out? Have you any thing to check it with?

When it goes wrong, does it try to start?
If not, the side stand switch might be worth a clean?

Mine has been like that for a good six months now.

Battery on the way out. If mine cranks for more than 5 seconds battery starts to die. Usually starts in a flash though, so not a huge issue.

I just avoid switching it off more than once every hour or two, and am waiting for February pay for a new battery. . .

I had the same problem..got stuck a few times when I was out on a long ride..ended up getting jump starts and being pushed..Turned out to be a loose connection on the battery.
