    Enigine paint

Over the winter i am thinking about removing my engine and painting it. 20 years old and it is looking a little tired, paint flaking away from the head etc.

Now i have no experience of painting at all, i have watched a few youtube clips but most of them differ as how to do and method etc

Does anyone want to help a complete novice and tell me how to do it or what results they have had.

How do i prepare the engine? Whats the best paint to use?

Or should i just take it to a shop and get it done professionally?

I know its a big ask but any advice would be much appreciated.

    Re: Enigine paint

Ive painted more bike engines than I care to count over the past 40 years.

The vital and most important thing is to get ALL the old loose paint off and get the bare metal 100% oil free and clean.

I use a snake neck attachment on an electric drill with a softer type wire brush to prevent metal surface damage..............and plenty of patience !

Once the engine is ready for paint, give it a good once over with some thinners or meths to get it really clean, just before you paint.

There have been many good engine paints over the years (PJ1 etc) but the current range of Simoniz Engine Paints seem to work very well if used properly and are priced sensibly.

As with any paint job, preparation and cleanliness of the bare metal are essential before painting, or it will never last.

    Hope that helps

I painted my 1195 block in Halfords ordinary satin black, still looking good.

I painted my rad and pipes in hammerite smooth (and I actually do lots of miles on mine) so I suspect if its black it will be fine Dougie (assuming its black you want )
