    Thanks Guys,

Seems I have hit a very rare snag from the comments on here and the OA site.
Just my luck - at least it only cost me a new battery before I found it.

Kendo - no oil leak from rear of engine would have got through the oil seals on starter motor housing to cause this amount of gunk - it was oil tight when I split it and then it started to leak once the long bolts were relaxed. So it ain't got in there by external drips or splashing.

Got to have come from inside engine OR something greasy/ oily breaking down within the SM - which I would guess is unlikely.

Currently researching buying a used one to refurb or biting the bullet for a new Mitsuba unit.

Ok so I cleaned it up to try and see what had been going on -

Two of the brushes were way past it and the commutator had significant wear from running in the gloop.

So I got a replacement starter fitted today - and she is spinning over properly now.
Checked the armature of the replacement and it just had a bit of carbon dust from the brushes and NO OILY gunk. So I cleaned it with brake cleaner and bench tested it with a spare battery before it went back - just to make sure it was spinning over freely without load.

Lets hope this is the last I have seen of this "rare" issue

You will spend 2 hours of your life wading through that lot. 2 hours you will never get back.
    Good luck.
