STARTER MOTOR DEAD - REPLACEMENTS - RECON, AFTERMARKET ETC.

    Hi Fellas,

Starter motor has died this week.

Got it out & stripped and it has a fairly worn armature and was full of black oily grease EVERYWHERE !!!(couldn't even see the brushes)

Amazed it worked at all really.

Anyhow - can we get them recon exchange units anywhere - or is there a new aftermarket item that people have found ??

Kawasaki new one is mucho dinero amigos LOL

Anyone got a new genuine one they want to part with ??

Will get some pics up in a bit - but does anyone know what causes that black gunge inside - is it a break down from something in the winding or engine oil sneaking in past an O ring or what ?

Never had a SM die before so this is all new to me.

Trust this to be during great riding weather :-( :-( :-(

Advice Please - need to decide this weekend so I can get the part(s) ordered Monday.

    Mark

Seem to be some repro ones knocking around -

Plenty of used ones on Ebay. I would go that route personally

Fair Point - I have my eye on a couple already.

This was the inside of my broken one -

Think the black gunge had acted like cutting paste cos the commutator is down to below 26 mm where the brushes make contact.

Service limit in the FSM is 27 mm so it aint worth fitting a new armature & brush kit from Kawasaki.

More to the point - where has that black crap come from - oil leak from engine past an O ring into the Starter or what ???????

Seems like the most logical explanation , unless there is oil dripping from the rear of the motor , possibly from the rocker cover gasket which is finding its way into the starter.

I would try cleaning it all out, fitting a new O ring and trying it again, what's to lose?

    Sounds like a plan Nige

Anyone bought a new repro one that worked well ??

Seem to be several makes doing it - a recommend or avoid would be helpful if anyone has tried any of them.

    Cheers

I don't suppose Kawasaki actually make starter motors Mark so would think any reputable dealer and you would be fine.

That said, if you can get a seal I would still clean that one up and give it a go but I expect ZZR and late GPZ11 will also fit if you get stuck

Yours is the first post I've seen of a dead s/m I've seen since I joined the forum. I suspect they are very reliable. I'd rebuild that with new Orings or buy a second hand one. Heaps of ZZR/ZRX/GPZ ones on eBay.
