    Steering lock issues

    Hi all,

I have another issue with the REX now in the form of the steering lock. Key switches the steering lock easily but is a complete and utter b!tch to undo. TBH it looked like i was trying to steal the bike today. Lots of wiggling of the key to get the lock to move. The key works fine for switching on and off and the lock itself looks ok. Seat lock works fine without issues. The key is a genuine Kawasaki one and looks fairly good and straight, so i guess is long enough as copy keys can be too short

Is this an issue with these locks when they are old? Is there a standard fix? has anyone stripped these locks and rebuilt them?
I could buy a second hand lock but if that's going to give me the same issues i may as well buy a new pattern one and have 2 keys for the bike.

    Thanks for any help advice

Try moving the bars slightly when unlocking. If you have the pin tight in its stop in the steering lock it is hard to unlock. You need to find the point of least resistance.

And try a squirt of oil in the lock as well, you may be surprised, first thing i do with a stiff lock.

    Thanks for the replies.
I was moving the bars whilst trying to unlock the bike.
Re the oil. I was under the impression that locks should not be oiled. Only lock specific grease ( graphite based) should be used.
    Thanks for the help

I put 3-in-1 oil in my locks using a syringe and needle - works great.

On the issue of ignition barrels, the spring loaded cover for my lock on my bike does not spring back when you remove the ignition key and is permanently open. Think the spring may have saw better days. Are there any fixes for this, not that it ever rains in Scotland!
