View Full Version : Ignoring forums question

Can I ignore certain threads?
Say I only want to keep up with a few forums -- say general, Q&A, for sale and pit stop -- is there some way of only seeing new post in these forums when I click 'New posts'?
Otherwise I end up getting sucked into reading half the stuff on the other forums when I haven't really got the time for it.
I've scanned the FM and can't find anything. Subscribing to threads doesn't seem to help much.
Don't tell me I have to exercise some... gah... self-control?
And while I'm playing the n00b lu5er, is there any way of getting the RSS feeds to sort/show by last post date, not by thread creation date?

I dont think you can ignore certain forums on the new post search but you can sort forums threads by clicking on the words the the top of the forum.
Go to a forum, eg RSS News feeds, then you can click these title words....
Rating, Thread, Thread Starter, Last Post, Replies, Views
They are active titles and when you click them they do a resort according to the title. Once a title is selected you will see a small icon next to it, you can click that to reverse the sort order.
Hope that helps.

Sorry. We're talking at cross-purposes: I meant the feeds from this site rather than the RSS feed forum.
I've sorted it out now, but here's what I meant: If you go to a forum with a half-decent browser (Firefox or Safari, say), you get a little RSS icon:
http://doris.primesolid.com/zrxoc/rss.gif
If you subscribe to the feed (in your RSS reader or browser), it lists the 15 most recently added threads in a forum. I was trying to work out if there was some way to get it to show the 15 most recently modified threads (which is the default view if you look at the forums on the web, after all).
Turns out you can do it, just in case anyone ever wants to know. You have to manually add '&lastpost=1' feed URL in your RSS reader as described in this post (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=203560&highlight=rss) on Jelsoft's forum.
So the XML you get is this (http://www.zrxoc.com/board/external.php?type=RSS2&forumids=7&lastpost=1), instead of this (http://www.zrxoc.com/board/external.php?type=RSS2&forumids=7).
Obvious, innit?

I'll go and clean my wheels, shall I?

OK, I've got it.
The basic URL for the 'New posts' feature is:
http://www.zrxoc.com/board/search.php?do=getnew
If you want to exclude a particular forum or two, do it like this:
http://www.zrxoc.com/board/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=14,19
(where 14 is the id of Rexers Return, 19 is Polls).
If you only want to show new posts from a few forums, specify them like this:
http://www.zrxoc.com/board/search.php?do=getnew&include=5,7,25,15
(5 is General, 7 is Q&A, 25 is For Sale and 15 is Pit Stop). You can set up a bookmark with a URL like that and then only get the new posts on the forums you want.

...and for completeness' sake, you can also double-click the pinboard icon to the left of each forum on the main forums home page/index to mark a forum read.
:thanks: to chrisH for this info. I've made it a 'sticky' in case any other anoraks members might want to benefit from it. ;)
