View Full Version : Steering damper

Does anyone know of a steering damper that doesn't need a second mortgage to pay for it? The steering gets very twitchy over 95. All the ones I discovered are around £350.

A lad on the zrxoa makes the brackets , you then need a 2nd hand gixer thou one I believe .

er....ok..so what do I know..but...have you checked the bearings and tyres etc? Steering on mine is fine (well...at low speeds it's a bit "flippy" and quick.....but...over that no probs!)

Id blame the bike. Sort the handling first...it shouldnt get excessivly twitchy over 95. . . over 140 yes,but up to that it should be fine.
Id check tyre condition/pressure,head bearings & suspension set up before parting with wedge on a steering damper which you shouldnt really need...:\

I felt that by turning the eccentrics and dropping the yokes, that it could benifit from a damper (perhaps, maybe, not sure)
But it would look good :thumb:

Mark, I have the same problem with mine and I've checked all the above and set up is as recomended on this site. New tyres helped alot but at speed I trust it about as much as a rotweiler with tooth ache. I will be getting a damper as soon as my finances allow.

Ted on the ZRXOA makes a complete kit including brackets for the ZRX.
'Traditional' side-mount too.
I got one on purgerex2 and well impressed, tested at Donington.
Sort the handling first though, as it shouldn't be a problem into the hundreds without a damper as Snoops says.

I have a GSXR1000K4 steering damper if anyone needs one, although there's no bracketry with it, the damper itself is in top condition and came from the low mileage bike that my front end was on.

Hmm, can't see that the bearings would be a problem as it's only 6 months old, however I'm not really that impressed with tyres. Have to look into this I think.

Doh:doh: one thing I've forgotten, having had a real good think about this, when I first got the bike I set the suspension up harder as I quite often have the missus on the back, this consiquently will make it twitchier at higher speed. Sorry about that, I can't beleive I forgot about it, what a donut.:headbang:

is there any benefit of the under the nose cone one over the side mount or is it just asthetics ??

I don't fancy a side-mount one: I'd either keep stabbing myself when I squeeze past the bike in the garage or some knob-'ed would have tweak whenever they were passing.

Gentlemen, Purge is absolutely correct. A side mount is quite traditional for this style bike and the mount is to be found at the ZRXOA. Personally, I like the look. In the end, you will probably be out more money for the side mount dampner.
On the other hand, Zuki dampners are cheap, readily available, easy to rebuild, and worke quite well. The obvious down side is that they are not adjustible.
Cmikimoto and Chrispy (ZRXOA) both make mounting kits for the Zuki dampner.
Should you go the Suzuki route, be advised that you should drain the oil from the dampner and replace it with 10W. It is too thin in stock form. Suspension fluid or even automatic transmission fluid will work quite nicely.
One word of caution with the Suzuki dampner. Some of these have a little more travel than others. On my bike, the steering will just barely contact the stop with the dampner at full travel. This is not a problem for me, but it is something to be aware of. You do have to drill a hole with the Suzuki unit. No drilling is required with the side mount.
Bill.

Technically, I can't tell the difference between the dampers on the purgerexes, even on the track, and both work well and are fully adjustable by clicks. Some say the side-mount runs cooler due to the longer stroke, but you'd have to be a superstar blasting round the bumpy TT circuit to cause damper over-heating.
So, for me it's just because it looks good, plus I wanted to try something different from what I already have on purgerex1 (the hyperpro under headstock kit jobbie).
BTW, if you can avoid catching the handlebars when moving the bike in the garage, you won't have a problem snagging the side damper, it's much more tucked in than it looks in the photos :thumb:

Useful on a track tho. . . or if youve modified the geometery of the bike to include an acute head angle. . . :D:
