Our PC thought it would be great to have a complete mental breakdown!!! end result, a new hard drive, meaning we've lost everything we had stored on it.... oh for making back up disc's! still all working now, again.

Sometimes you can use the original drive as a slave to retrieve stored info.

I had no idea either. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks)

the old hard drive got taken away with the very nice bloke that came and sorted it all out, would have been a good idea to have asked him, if we could have kept it.... :headbang:

I'm running SATA RAID 1
In a nutshell, its 2 hard drives running identical information, if one fails or is corrupted then you replace it and copy all the information from the good drive to the new one. In theory it gives better seek times when accessing data as it reads from both discs at the same time. Downside is if you have 2 120Gb drives you only get 120Gb of storage not 240.
Can be a bit of a pain to set up sometimes but it's worth the effort if you have experienced drive failure before, as i and many others have.

I'll get my :anorak:

bought myself a 60gb travan drive cheap of fleabay (came with 10 tapes) i just ghost image anything i wanna keep on it (although when you have 6 terrabites of hd space and 2.7 terrabites of info stored it gets a bit long winded)

gotta work out a better way me thinks

RAID - redundant array of inexpensive disks.

basically a way of mirroroing pr protecting your data so if 1 disk fails you don't lose all your data.

a spare disk (e.g. external USB) and a regular copy to it is a good alternative but requires thought.
