the antivirus software that came bundled with the desktop and laptop pc's is about to expire ( Norton & McAfee respectively) and both are asking for renewal subscriptions.

Question is, is there a decent free one to download that I can replace them both with?

AVG free doesn't initiate pop-up adverts, leastways not with the dozens of times I've installed it.

IMO it works better than Norton or McAfee 'cos it doesn't get in the way and ask awkward questions all the time

Use ASC (http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html) to keep your system tip-top :D:

Issue I had with AVG was with constant pop up of offers asking to upgrade to premium and or buy extra prudcts blah blah if you google AVG pop up you will see it plenty of people have complained about it but AVG answer is its free which is fair enough.

here was AVG's response to consumer complaints

Hi,
for your and others information, this campaign was started around 07/15/2009, and should last a month, the pop up should be showed in AVG Free EN language only, probably 4 times per week only.
As was already said in another thread, this campaign is pointed to users, who are satisfied with AVG and would like to pay for it (get better AVG Technical support, more AVG components to protect the computer, better scheduler of tests and updates, ...) and as you are using AVG for free, it can show you some "advertisement to buy AVG"... especially when this campaign is running only one month per year...
Thanks

I use ESET Smart Security 4 (http://http://www.eset.com/) and have never had a problem, anti-virus/firewall is one of the very few bits of software i don't mind paying for, have to say that Norton will never ever get installed on any of my machines again, wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole !

Thanks for the replies chaps. Next question..... Is it best to remove the existing anti virus software before installing the new one?

Here's a link to the Norton page that will let you download their removal tool if the ordinary "Add/Remove" from Control Panel doesn't work.

Personally I would use it even if Add/Remove seems to work as there will be loads of junk left in the registry using the standard method

Have a look HERE (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&docid=2006032009205413&nsf=sharedtech.nsf&view=docid&pid=2006032009205413&pkb=sharedtech)
