View Full Version : Are Ducati owners all tosser's ?

I was in Woods bike shop the other day , [Triumph and Ducati dealer] looking at a Monster , or monstrosity !
Noticed it had an open type clutch cover , you could actually see the clutch springs ! [dry clutch]
Just thinking how impractical it would be to ride , you could only take it out on a sunny day ?
Looks like purely a poser's machine , not much use for anything else !

Ducati riders in general though ?... well at places like the Ponderosa cafe you see them come in on 916 /998 ect with wives /girlfriends complete with matching leathers , lids , and boots .

Of course they never mix with owners of japanese machines , we are looked upon as the lower orders of society or something !

Best laugh for me was at a trackday at Oulton Park , a guy turned up with a Foggy replica Ducati complete with Foggy replica leathers , with a big no 1 on his back.

He got overtaken by everyone, i lapped him twice in a 20 minute session !....In fact he went home after about 2 sessions i think , because i didnt see him again .

And this was the novice group as well ! Talk about all the gear no idea !

:bike: I am not adversed to making numb-nut mistakes myself, but I have to mention the funniest thing I ever saw......

 Had a run down to Godstone one summer on my slow but very fun Honda Dominator (leo vince/Dynojet stage one), and picked a race with an immaculate Ducati 916 (one of my favourite bikes)...Ducati leathers and helmet and full Termi's. On the straights he roasted my ears with his Termi's and simply blew me away :( ....then on the corners he just could not ride the thing...brake-stand it up-brake-stop-turn it-check self in mirror-accelerate!! Eventually and absolutely flat out with a following wind, head on the tank and feet on the rear footpegs, I put-putted past him at 100MPH on a no brainer, with no thought for sense or safety blahblah:

Parked up in Godstone by a little pond and a couple of minutes later in came the 916. He stopped in the same car park a few feet away...nodded at me...raised his visor and smiled...put down the sidestand and proceeded to dismount.....crash went the beautiful 916 as the deathtrap stand fully retracted!! £12,000 of immaculate Ducati bike and gear in full panic mode :o:

I Am a big Ducati fan, always have been and have to say I have never felt so much sympathy for a bike in all my life...this gorgeous machine prostrate and scarred.....was very funny though!! I very nearly bought a Multistrada before the Rex....one of the things that put me off were the City boy owners always in the shop....no idea what bikes were about, loved their reflections in the mirror etc...each to their own and I would not stereotype people but, in my experience the Ducati crowd are quite posey.

:agreed: Not tossers, great laughing stock though

I bet he thought he was fast by overtaking all the cars (and maybe some bikes) on the road and leaving them at the lights.

What a tosser.... er I mean laughing stock ;)

Not all are that bad, just most, one story I do like to relate involving a Ducati 916 and its owner,

1015 on a sunday morning call out to owners house for a non start, just a flat battery so no real problem it just had not been ridden for a while. 2 - 2 1/2 years old and just over 2500 miles on the clock.

take it for a ride was my advice to get the battery charged up again. so whilst i was checking his tyre pressures (what a nice bloke I am) off he went to get changed. Yep, matching power ranger suit. Off he went. :bike:

An hour or so later, recalled to depot to pick up hiab accident unit to attended incident on A32, there was my punter at side of road, power ranger suit covered in mud.

It had gone straight through a hedge, trouble was could not lift it over the top so had to pull it back through the hedge.

He then put in a complaint to the company, saying accident was my fault cause I had told him to take bike for a ride.

Dont start me on that one, just found out that some silly cow is claiming I have damaged her sons mini, not withstanding he managed to rag it hard enough to rip out a drive shaft.

The Ducatis of recent years are some of the best handling bikes ever made.
Some are ridden by totally crap posers, some by enthusiastic, hard-core racers.

How can a bike define whether its rider is a tossa?

Some ZRX riders are complete tossas IMHO, but we all know the ZRX is one of the best bikes ever made :teeth:

People on nice Ducati's at trackdays are only ever one of two things. They are either hopelessly crap, or frickin' brilliant. Never in the middle!

When me and the missus fell off our old ZZR in Richmond the only peson to stop was a car driver. He helped us up, stayed with us while we got the bike started and gave it a once over for me, all while letting my wife sit in his car as it was starting to rain. After a bit of crack he told me he had a Ducati and was a big fan and rode them all his biking life.

Just a one off example that a Duke rider can be a good bloke

I owned one once, for a very short time, I never got to ride it either :\ It was one of those times in life, when plaster from toe to crotch and fingers to shoulder, made it so.
But a fellow I knew was selling his GT 860. It would start but after 5 minutes would stop, he had given up on it and just wanted to be rid off it. To cut a long story short, it ended up costing me 1/10 of F#*# all and $2.00 to fix. Then I sold it for 9/10 of F*#* all. And that paid for another months drinkin, while waiting for all them bones to mend. So therefore I'm a tosser's, for being all broken up, and drinkin the profits away, the bloke that sold it was a tosser, it only needed a condensor, and the bloke that bought, well he was a limp wristed tosser, but his money was still good. :). Yep all of them are tossers, of the highest magnitude. :bum:

I still own a Ducati and have had had 3 so far.

As a veggie I do not wear dead animal skin so have never suffered from matching leathers syndrome.

Lovely bikes but expensive to service, mine have all been reliable but one of my brothers Ducatis had a traction control system - when it rained it went on to one cylinder.

888 SP4 was my favourite minor problem was the pipes setting off car alarms and the fact that the handling came into its own at 120mph on bumpy sweepy back roads. Just where it is not the best place to be doing this kind of speed. I ended up in between the front seats of an XR2 writing the car off and bursting the Fiestas petrol tank. It is quite fun going through the rear window of a car it bends quite a long way before it bursts.

Major problem was that you couln't leave it anywhere in case it got nicked and it ate tyres.

I sold it and bought a two year old Valkyrie an new XR400 and a Ducati Darmah and still had £2500 in the bank.

... and yes I have done a 916 in some bends on the 25 year old Darmah!

i own a 916, dont ride it thou, as I cant get on with it, sounds superb, and is very nice to look at, but it has to go....
when I did take it out, I'd always wave to other riders, even HD owners!!!;) (still was the same even with a SM) and never thought I was better than anyone else, you never know, you may need help when stuck at the side of the road, as a 916 is not the best bike to push, speaking form personal point of view, 'kin heavy bleedin' thing. :bike:

Must say, I did not have trouble with the matching leathers, the lady never went on the back, and the Ducati leathers dont go up to my SIZE.... lol.

Some Ducatis are works of art. But works of art of meant to be admired not ridden through ice and snow. I hate myself for being practical when it comes to vehicles.

Rex's aren't meant to be ridden through ice and snow either - you should see my wheels!

But it still gets ragged all over the place. I have blue Power Ranger leathers that are quite similar to the blue of my S, but any colour matching is incidental. I take it out on the track and I'm not usually too much of a mobile chicane (I hope), but the leather always go on road or track. I've lost enough skin to last a lifetime.

I used to have a Monster and couldn't ride that very well either so guess you could say I'm a bit of a tosser! When I finally make it to a Hants Chapter ride out you will see how bad my riding is! (I'm hoping someone takes pitty on me and will show me how to corner) As for matching leathers I can't even manage to match a tie and shirt for work...............

No such thing as a bad bike, although to be fair you can see "stereotypes" on different models. Harleys, CX500's, BMW's, Kawasaki 500 triples can attract their own brand of rider.
