View Full Version : ZXR400 re-build
Moriwaki man!
1st October 2009, 11:50 AM
Finally the time has come to get this back on the road, it's been a manic week pulling all the parts off / out , getting things cleaned, painted and polished but finally a bit of progress today :D:
continuing on from the pic's in the for sale thread:
Tomorrow will see the back end finished and over the weekend fixtures, electrics, exhaust and body panels. Looking for engine running Sunday afternoon and book it's MOT on Monday for Tuesday or Wednesday.
This is build #1
Once it's got all it's paperwork and plate sorted I'll spend the next few months swapping out parts aiming towards the final build

Planning to put the missus on one of these in the future. They are still poretty expensive here, with very high mileage, so I recon they are good value and reliable.
What are the plans? :eyebrow:

Only major problem is them blowing head gaskets if not kept properly cool. Apart from that you can eek 80BHP out of them
Plans  Try a shed load of parts !
Already has the 33mm FCR's on it, then;
Kwak racing cam's
Kwak racing CDI & pulsar
Kwak racing Zost - but more likely keep the BEET Ti system I have ;)
Port n polish
try Sansei racing zost, DIC racing zorst and assorted cans
SP spec' including solo seat
6 pot callipers from ZRX
and a heap of other stuff too........

Yip ! ZRX is destined for other USD's when cash flow permit's which will lead to radial callipers and petal disc's
I do have the other ZXR USD's in the background to overhaul and they can go back on too.
All in hand ;)

Cheers :D:
have been undecided on the sidestand :hmm:
Paint it Silver , paint it the Blue Black like the frame and swinger or something else........
So decided to put it on the bike as is and see if it makes it any easier to decide.
Helped a bit as looks good Silver when down but would look good done the Black when up as the Torque arm on the other side is Black.
I'll do something with it in a couple of weeks time.
It was a 1990 H2 when I got it and now has J2 bodywork and front forks. I've also got the J2 engine on the veranda to go in at some point which has a closer ratio box in it and different pistons.
The H2 motor also has the BTL clutch in it and when I open it up want to see if it'll transplant into the other ZRX motor I have - it's going to get stripped down to the box and built back up along with another ZXR engine using the F3 racing parts.
I've seen that BEET put the ZZR box's into racing ZRX4's so might have a bash at that - missed a ZZR engine the other day for 1,200 Yen :\
Get the bike back on Friday so more pic's to come :D:

Solid as a rock on the road and once I get used to being all scrunged up again is going to be fun up the mountain

Not yet , but need to write to him to get a letter of sale from him so I can make the track bike road legal too. Will include these snap's in the envelope
you don`t feckin` hang around do ya (rebuilding that is!)
Ah, but I got the bike about a year ago so all the parts were in the cupboard waiting for me to get on with it :o:
Each day has brought a new "snag" , not suprising when the bike had stood for so long and generally they are 20yr old parts that are failing.
After installing the new spark plug well O rings it started to fail on #1 cylinder, some wiggling about and it would catch again so new set of plugs in and sorted. Also think only having a litre of fuel in it didn't help.
Yesterday after about 30 miles the rocker cover gasket is now weeping so that's on order. But it's stuff like that you expect to fail as they've dried out with sitting (Yes even rubber O rings dry out) then get heated again and under pressure fail.
At 6,500 rev's it was sitting at a ton on the ZRX that's about 70, box is slippery smooth and clutch very light.
