this is just for those that have bought their ZRX new.
ive been offered a kawasaki extended warrenty that costs £160 for 12 months, or £210 for 24 months. now i know these are normally bullet proof bikes, but have any of you had problems within the first 2 years that needed dealer attention????
thanks.

:dunno:
Bought mine brand new from the same place as yours but was never offered the extended warranty option.
Witin the first two years, bearing in mind I covered just short of 20K miles in that time I had a chain replaced under warranty. Can't blame Kwak for that, it was a substandard chain.
The only other problem in that time is that the tyres keep wearing out. ;)

Only problem on mine was top hose chafing on cam cover bolt, nearly wore half way through it :( replaced under warranty.
Apart from that and the paint falling off the rear disc within 3 months, no problems at all, had it 2 1/2 years now.

My first rex had a rad guard, tank, front mudguard, and downpipes replaced all due to corrosion/ poor paint finish!! I wonder if anyone on here has it 1100R R***PEF. Stiil love the bikes to bits no other mechanical problems it's just the usual built to a budget finish quality and it's not as bad as it seems.Kawasaki's have always been like that. ;)

GAP Insurance is diff to what oaks has been offered I think grem...Nigel toook out Gap on his Z750 it guarantees you what you paid for your bike if its wrote off or stolen doesnt it..You can only take it out on new bikes I believe...

Bought my 2003 1200R new, have done a few long trips on it since, absolutely no problems whatsoever. It lives in a garage, not outside, and I clean it regularly - my old ZX9-R definitely benefited from regular attention, as does my current ZX7-R. Not sure it would be this handsome for long if left outside in the damp...
I wonder if Kawasaki trains and ships rust?!

according to the letter i got, its called kawasaki plus .
a new idea here, but its been running in the states for a while now.
thats why grem etc never got offered it on their bikes.
now, i never usually buy extended warranties, because i believe that if a company thinks their products that sh*t they have to sell you extended warranty, i wouldnt buy the product to start with. (my bike came with 2 years warranty as std).
the reason im asking is this.
as im off to OZ in about 16 months time (permanently), and im not sure if im going to take the rex, it may be a good selling point on a newish, but no longer produced bike.(im working on the fact kawasaki will upgrade the ZRX to 1400). also £210 for 24 months seems good insurance againt a cracked radiator etc etc.
just wanted a few opinions, as the guy in the workshop said warranty work on NEW zrx's was nil. but at the prices quoted, its tempting to a tight fisted git like me.

Mick, I suggest a quick pm to craig, he may well have passed out seeing that milageThat's not the half of it.
I have a Gpz 500, which hit the streets on the same day as :craig:s :zrx:
That's done 9000 miles and is hardly worth keeping as it rarely gets used. :dunno:
Within the last 4 years I've also owned a Gpz 1100 which I did at least 14000 miles on.
So in the last 4 years I've covered something like 50000 miles on two wheels.
I once covered nearly a quarter of :craig:s total mileage in one weekend on my :zrx:
:hmm: Maybe I'd better send that PM to :craig: to see if he's all right.

£210 won't get you a replacement radiator for a start. Does that warranty include labour charges? (currently at about £40 per hour)
Sounds like a good idea for peace of mind, let alone as a selling point to potentially boost its resale value. Had I have been offered that I may well have taken it.

When I bought my 2003 ZRX in the begining of 2004 I got the Kawasaki Plus coverage! Being that I got a good deal on the ZRX in the first place since the New bikes were ready to hit the showroom floor! I forget what it cost, but it wasnt very expensive for an extra 4 yrs coverage.......I havent had to use the coverage yet, ZRX seems to be bullet proof! Atleast you can still get a ZRX over on your side of the pond, actually you are able to get some bikes that I would love to get my hands on over here!

I got the same offer through in the post yesterday.
It does seem quite tempting as it includes parts and labour for any warranty work.
But the bike is a proven design with no new features to go wrong, so I think you'd be unlucky to need to make a warranty claim.
Now isn't the time to be paying out an extra bill so I'll give it some thought over the New Year.

Only prob I've had with mine is the end plate of the silencer came loose, had a new silencer on warranty (still in its box tho as scorpion can turned up at same time :D: ). Wont be bothering with the extended warranty as I'll be looking at getting a new one when current :zrx: is 2

It could be money well spent if you have a prob at £40+ for labour . In the 80's it was called K Cover . Saved me a fortune on an 18 month old Gpz 11 I bought as some 6 mths later it was burning oil due to a big bore kit I did'nt know was fitted I got a brand new set o barrels and pistons .:ysam:

It seems to me I must be the ONLY ZRX owner to ever make a warranty claim on the gearbox. Mine went bang on Christmas day (of all days). The engine starts and runs but wont go into gear, and when it does you can't let the clutch out cause it dies. Had to take the Akro system off, so they can't say "I modified it", and I will be taking it into the shop in Ipswich tomorrow. WIsh me luck...
Has anybody else ever experienced gearbox problems?

Bad luck Usafric,
I believe the gearbox is quite a strong pieace of kit. It will be interesting to find out exactly what has gone wrong with yours. Hope you get it soughted ok.

If you like giving away money, buy the warranty. Otherwise, you'll be fine without it. They won't fix anything that might go wrong anyway (like a frame misalignment, which is the only serious problem I've ever seen crop up on a new rex, and which KHI refused to repair).
Whatever you do, make sure you do what it says here:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
This guy knows his shit. I broke my rex in this way, and it makes more horsepower lower in the rev range than any other stock-motored rex out there (like 100hp @ 5850 rpm :D: ). It went on the dyno at 300 miles. And uses NO oil whatsoever.

Hi there, I brought my ZRX new from Vale M/C in cheshire in April or may 05. Ive also had a letter from Kawasaki offering me extended warrenty but i just chucked the letter in the bin. I think the engines are prety well proven as reliable and the chance of a major problem is quite slim (i hope) use the money you save from the warrenty to buy something more fun ie end can or front fork tune.

Well here goes. Just heard from the dealer who looked at my bike (Orwells, in Ipswich), they said the output bearing broke up, and the ONLY way that happens is if the chaib was too tight. I can already see it now Kawaski are going to say the maintenance was done incorrectly. I belive I am in for a battle. Will have to wait till Orwells speak to Kwak tomorrow. Also it broke some of the gears so the case has to be split, sounds like it's going to be a big job...

Update, Orwells are still talking to Kwak UK, and it seems they are looking for something else wrong with my bike, ie wheelie related. But guess what, nothing, the bike is in excellent mechanical condition, so it sounds like they can't prove I did anything wrong. So should be covered under warranty. Got some pice here:

It's not just the cost of the warranty that you have to consider. The bike will still need to be serviced at a Kawasaki dealer for the warranty to remain in effect. So, if you have three services a year on your bike (mine will), it's going to be around an extra £100-£150 on the servicing costs instead of going to an independant garage. So, over two years, you are looking at a minimum of £600 in additional servicing costs + £210 for the warranty. £800+ buys an awful lot of bike bits if something goes wrong.

Update to the update. Kwak UK, have said "beyond a reasonable doubt" that the bearing failed because the chain was too tight. I had a go at Orwells for not fighting enough for me, they said they gave Kwak all the facts, but me thinks they gave them too much info. After talking to both Kwak and Orwells, Kwak gave me a goodwill gesture offer of them paying for all the parts (about 100 quid) and 1/2 the labour (about 8 hours total). That would mean I pay 4 hours labour around 200 quid. I am very upset mainly at Orwells, but Kwak also, because they just don't seem to give a rats arse about the customer. The yank in me coming out. In the US they would have done it just to keep the customer happy. So now I will not be giving Orwells my business or giving them the thumbs up, unless they change their mind...

Update!!! Bike is done, Kwak UK paid for the parts and all the labour for tear-down. I paid for build-up (4 hours @ 35 P.P.H) and oil. Total cost is 177.02 (I ain't paying the VAT either). So really not too bad. Still Kwak UK should have paid it all. But its running again. See you all at the Ace soonish...
