Where would you like to ride in 2006?
The officers will be meeting soon to arrange the Folly programme for 2006 so this is your opportunity to tell us the tracks you like riding.
We will be influenced by how many of you choose a particular circuit but we cannot promise to visit a particular circuit because dates do depend on when the various circuits can accommodate us. Please don't be disappointed if your favourite is not on the final list.
So - where do you want to ride in 2006? Anywhere you definitely don't want to ride?
Have your say here:
http://www.motorcyclefolly.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=211
You'll need to register to post, just like on this board.

Not doing Castle Combe if it's got the noise restriction. Found the circuit a bit boring too. It's not the same thrumming around & around like a Hoover ;)
Oulton could be good, not done that one.

Noise restriction will deffo be in place - at least I'll see how effective my decibel killer thingy is. I thought it was a good refresher to get back into the swing of things.

I won a day at Mallory Park with the Suzuki Performance Race School via MCN. :)
I can honestly say it was one of the ghardest days I had done on a bike but my instructor was prett good looking, Blonde with poney tail and yes a woman.
I would recommend anyone to try one :bike:

SHe was in a one piece full race suit also, I was slow agains the MCN tea boy so got put with the woman instructor with a woman who had never ridden above a 500cc before, so I was too fast for her so ended up with one-to-one.
Excellent day, highly recommended.
They supply the works from boots to bike. One of the best things for me is it is local for me from Grantham and of course it was free, I won it :)

You need to get out of the novices if you've done more than one or two trackdays. It's carnage! Me and some of the other guys I ride with watch the novices and it looks bloody terrifying out there!
The Inters don't really go much quicker, but Intermediate riders have a better understanding of where they are meant to be on the track. I've seen novices lining up 4 across for a bend and peeling in like bloody spitfires... until Sqdrn Ldr hits the gravel rapidly followed by Ginger, Johnny and Spike....
Purge

I've been in inters for 2 seasons, but went back into novices for Donnington last year, and must say it was MUCH more exciting! Carving through the randomly moving track furniture was quite a buzz.
I'll stay in inters this year, at least you get some consistent practice at getting the lines right ;)

Nope. They all depend on how the take-up of the earlier days is this year ... and that's not been good so far :nope:
I reckon it's the fear, uncertainty and doubt about Mallory that's not helping: we'd have expected that to be nearly full by now and it's not.

I reckon it's the fear, uncertainty and doubt about Mallory that's not helping: we'd have expected that to be nearly full by now and it's not.
With yet another chicane (on a one minute lap!!) in the middle of Gerrards, Mallory Park has finally become the top class Go-Kart circuit it always had the potential to be.... Might be fun on a Supermoto now but that's about it.

I was thinking about signing up for Mallory, but I did a trackday there a few years back on ZX6R and to my limited experience that seemed pretty much as big a bike as you'd want around there. I can only imagine what it's like with three or four ZRX's hammering down into the hairpin and then trying to get through the bus stop. Good Photo opportunities I would expect :)

There's an additional Advanced space as of now, as the combination of my having to get an expert report in next week and having had the Revenue turn up on the doorstep 'asking' for £5½k means I'm a no-show now :\

Which straight is /will the meter be on?
Is it obvious where to back off?
How are you supposed to know if you're too loud before you start 'racing'?
What happens if you are too loud? Do they black flag you or stop the whole session?
So, can I get by with my race Akra, or will I need the crap 'road legal' baffle bolted in.
Or will I need the standard can bodged back onto the Akra headers?
This is all beginning to sound a bit pants.

5th September 2006, 03:25 PM
The day has always been billed as a "quiet" day with a 98db drive-by noise limit (like it says on the web site and booking form), which also explains why it's cheaper than the rarer noisy days.
We have been telling people this:
The trackday is a quiet day where bikes are measured on a drive by basis. Basically there are sound detectors placed around the circuit (Start / finish straight is one) where the sound level must not exceed 98db. If you have race cans or noisey road cans it would be advisable to bring the quiet ones along or some form of muffler (brillo pad etc.) just in case you trigger the sound sensor. Unfortunately there is no absolute way of telling whether a bike is going to be too loud and the circuit has the final say as to whether you would be allowed out.
We have also been telling people this:
1) Its a quiet day!
2) Don't try it on with race systems
3) Noise testing is carried out by the track officials and 'the maximum noise shall be 98db on a drive-by measurement which will be taken from the top of the start line wall adjacent to the start/finish gantry (or such other position or positions as shall be agreed between the Company and the Council)'
4) I have stressed its up to the rider to ensure the bike being ridden is properly silenced.
We also have an e-mail from Donington's Noise Control Officer:
This is just a quick e-mail to let you know that if you have any query's regarding noise for your track day on the 11/09/06 please don't hesitate to contact me, I would be more than happy to help. As most road riders are not aware of what 98db(A) actually means, we try to book people on our own track day's with standard exhaust systems only, as most after market exhausts fail the drive by limit. The more information the customer receives before arriving, the better, and like I say, I would be more than willing.
All of which means that I'll be running my full Akra with the aftermarket baffle in and if that fails - bearing in mind it passed the 105db static, close-up test at Castle Combe - then I'll be fitting my OEM silencer with the adaptor plate thingy.
Now, given that there will almost certainly be a noise meter on the start line wall next to the gantry for one, it would probably be wise to:
baffle your pipe as much as possible; or
refit a standard system; or
take as wide a line as possible past that point; and
maybe not give it the berries there either.
What they try to do is black-flag the individual concerned but if that fails or if there are a bunch of loud bikes and they can't suss out who the individuals are then they will stop the session.

98db is a tad naff with east midland airport on the doorstep:\

No, it's completely fscking stupid! Just like the fecktards who moved to Castle Combe next to an established race circuit and then complain about the noise! :hand:

Poped into Steve Jordans Shop to day and spoke to Sarah ("Mrs Steve Jordan") who said that the Monitoring equipment has in the past been mounted just at the beginning of the Pit Wall. Best to ride past on feathered throttles and to stay well over to the right as you go by. Apparently with baffels in we shouldn't really worry too much. Sarah's racing Suzuki apparently with full racing exhaust (no baffle etc) was recently tested @ 98 decibels, so we shouldn't get too paranoid about it. In her case putting the baffel in gained her 2bhp!
Steve and Sarah will be at Donington and will riding as Instructors. Steve will also be setting up suspension too, once the warm up laps for the A, I and N have been run.

Vid will be posted in a few days, sorry for the delay, away with work, and R1 mate, the one with the camera, even more IT thick than me.
Early review of tape, I'm told, shows very nice knee down action at Foggy esses of a couple of Rexers, then on to Melbourne, again knee down, but with one Rex's back wheel trying to overtake the front..
Then a tumble of sorts..
Any way, shit happens, I've parked a brand new (1200 miles on clock), 7R up side down at Redgates.
Great day, some ace moves here and there, and a couple of 'scalps'. :bike:
Well done Tigg for bending bike back in to shape and chargin' on.
Got the tosser on the red R1, if that helps..

Well even though i did bin the rex :\ , on the melbourne loop it was still a great day..
Thanks to :purge: for the replacement brake lever and Ournige the TPB official Pit Crew :thumb: to get me back up and running for the afternnon session..
Excuse No.1 (c) Dave Talbot.... a jack rabbit jumped out on me and i didn't want to hurt it.....(cheers Dave)
Excuse No.2 (c) :rhm: the Renault Cup weekend made the Melbourne Loop a bit slippy (actually true)
Excuse No. 3 (c) Steve Jordan racing, the front end was too soft and i probably had a bit of bounce which unsettled the front end and caused it to low side... this is more like it as it's known as high side alley and it was a low side.... :\ never mind it was still a bloody good day...
OK guys do your worst ;)

Top couple of days :thumb:
Last minute decision saw the TPB good weather pixie arriving at the hotel for beers, food, and chat. Splendid night catching up with whats been going on etc. Great to see the usual faces, and also some new ones (and apologies to Ournige who I didnt really speak to, I didnt realise who you were until very late in the day :o: )
Pictures were a bit crap as I dropped the camera and have obviously knackered something inside, until Simon messed with it a bit at lunchtime and I managed to get some more promising shots in the afternoon. Piccies will be posted as soon as I get them all (289 of them!!!) downloaded from the camera and sorted out.
Hope you all got home safely.

Pleasure (as always) meeting old faces and a few new ones too. Tig was knee down everywhere so we got him bumped up into the Rex group :bike:
:hail: for fettling Tiggrrrrrrrex back into shape with the Pit Crew enough to get it back out again after getting The Most Damage Ever.
:hail: hail: to Steve Jordan for fettling nearly every Rex there
Got home at 8.20pm after going all round Will's Mother's thanks to a numpty closing the M1. :swear:
Oh and I'm sure Nigel had a great day too, eh Dave?... ;)

Nice to meet some new old faces, ;) looking forward to next one already.
Bad luck Tigrrrrrrrrrr hope you get the rex back together soon!

Possibly the best one yet, perfect track, weather and company (racers and supporters!).
Got both purgerex's suspension fettled by SJ, big improvement, and newly USD'd purgedrex2 stayed in one piece on it's first test ride on the track after it's Sunday afternoon surgery and handled fine :teeth:
:hail: :tiggrr: for moving up to Inters and showing us his knee down stylee, which works as good as it looks.....except when he jumped out of gear knee on deck at 80mph a few metres in front of me. Not sure who was the most scared ;)
Had a couple of good dices with Typhoon (a new personal record for the most over-takes and re-overetakes in one session!) and :tennis: until he got his suspension fettled and cleared off on The Fireplace, even over-taking our very own :rhm: ex-Track God ;)
Excellent evening and day, was good to see so many Rexes on track and so many Rexers coming along to watch :thumb:

A most exellent day
Most unfortunate of Tigg to low side in high side alley (its only those not trying hard enough that dont come off) (or those NOT looking at the bloke in fronts taped out brake lights) but well bandaged together for the rest of the day.
Spent most of the morning chasing :rhm:, most of the early afternoon overtaking him only to be re-overtaken, then the session before last after :rhm: pulling off a spectacular overtaking manovre past a girl on a 400 down starkys, i out braked him into the chicane never to see him again.

Ah! That explains it: the 400 rider was a bloke, so I expect you just didn't see your braking point
I'd get your eyes tested ;)
